Heavyweight Competitors Are Taking the Spotlight at the World Junior Judo Championships in Dushanbe

Uzbekistan, Colombia, and South Korea achieved their initial wins in the tournament.

During the 2024 World Junior Judo Championship, locals and foreigners alike flock to Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, on the fourth day.

Following three amazing days of Judo, October 5th is dedicated to the heavyweight division.

The Director General of the IJF Vlad Marinescu and Ismoil Mahmadzoir, President of Tajik Judo, officially inaugurated the event.

At the lavish event, featuring top Judo athletes from Tajikistan and spectacular displays, spectators marked the birthday of Tajikistan’s President, Emomali Rahmon.

Colombia wins gold in the -78kg category

Colombia had a history. At a weight of -78kg, Brenda Olaya skillfully pushed her German rival in the opposite direction to secure her nation’s inaugural Junior World Champion title. Rustam Emomali, Dushanbe’s Mayor, gave out the medals.

I’m really thrilled. I’ve put in a lot of effort for this, it’s my final year as a junior so it’s really great. I take great pride in representing Colombia. I adore them and they are incredibly compassionate, extremely giving. Olaya expressed gratitude to Tajikistan by saying, “Thank you.”

Textbook tomoe-nage in the -100kg final

Muhammadsodik Sodikov from Uzbekistan competed in the -100kg final, where he successfully performed a Tomoe-Nage technique to score a waza-ari and secure the junior title. Marinescu, the Director General, awarded the medals.

Sodikov expressed gratitude to his team for their support in securing the much-needed gold. He also mentioned that it was his first time in Tajikistan and appreciated the warm welcome from the spectators. He expressed gratitude for all the love shown by our neighboring country.

First Korean victory in +78kg

Hyeonji Lee performed well at 78kg. The Korean competitor emerged victorious over Celia Cancan from France in the championship match. Gulnora Kenja Khasanzoda, Minister of Labour, Migration & Employment in Tajikistan, presented the medals.

Denis Batchaev took advantage of a mistake made by Kanan Nasibov from Azerbaijan in the +100kg final, managing to secure an unbreakable hold down that resulted in him winning the gold medal. He was given it by Mahmadzoir, the Tajik Judo President.

The enthusiastic audience will return the next day for the Mixed Team Event.
