A newly discovered musical composition, believed to be written by a young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was found in a German library.

The composition, created in the mid- to late-1760s, is made up of seven small movements for a trio of string instruments. Researchers from the Leipzig Municipal Libraries stated that it typically lasts for about 12 minutes.

The researchers found the composition in the music library of the city while assembling the most recent version of the famous Koechel catalog, which is the ultimate collection of Mozart’s musical compositions.

The Leipzig libraries label the piece as “Ganz kleine Nachtmusik” in the recent Koechel catalog.

According to the municipal libraries, the Koechel catalog states that the piece is found in one source and the author’s attribution implies it was written before Mozart’s initial journey to Italy.

Researchers believe the manuscript, found recently, is not written by Mozart, but is considered a replica made around 1780, with dark ink on medium-white paper.

Ulrich Leisinger of the International Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg stated that researchers had previously recognized the young Mozart primarily for his compositions of piano music, arias, and symphonies.

Mozart’s father’s list revealed to academics that there were “many other chamber music compositions” by the young artist, previously believed to be lost, until the discovery of the string trio, Leisinger explained.

Leisinger suggested that the idea may have originated from Mozart’s sister, leading to speculation that she may have held onto the piece as a keepsake of her brother.

Mozart, born in 1756, displayed exceptional talent as a child and started composing at a young age with the help of his father.

A string trio played the piece at the presentation of the updated Koechel catalog in Salzburg, Austria, on Thursday. Its German debut will take place at the Leipzig Opera on Saturday.
